An Updated Interview with Singular Mile, September 2026

How do you feel your sound has changed since we last talked last July? What new ways of working have you gained that influence your music?

Since last July I've joined a band, started DJing, and played music with more people than ever before in my life. It's been so much fun! Music has always been more of a solitary thing for me, but it's been great getting to create from a place of community and friendship and joy that's really different from my usual intimate, introspective approach. Writing and recording with other people has definitely shifted my sound and brought in a ton of new inspirations. One of my best friends is a producer and when we were trying to define the feel of a song we were working on together, he suggested songs I had never even heard of as inspiration and they sounded like exactly what I was trying to emulate! Being able to play and write with so many other people has broadened my taste, made me a better writer, and definitely improved my stage presence. It's also been a lot of fun!

Tell me about Out the Other Side!! What was the creative process behind it? What were some general messages you wanted to portray through it? What does it mean to you?

What do you do when you suddenly find yourself in the shoes of someone who hurt you? Out the Other Side is my way of saying that sometimes you should learn how to forgive. After coming out at the start of high school, I struggled to cope with many of the reactions I received and swore I would never be like them. I would know exactly what to say, what to do, how to respond perfectly. Or so I thought. When a close friend came out to me years later, I was anything but perfect. I was shocked, awkward, and distant. More than anything, I was more empathetic to everyone in my life from that time so many years ago. It was only once I had been in their shoes that I was finally ready to forgive a lot of the ways I had been hurt when really they just didn't know what to say. Obviously, there's times when things can't be forgiven (and shouldn't be), but as long as something is coming from a place of love and effort, I think we should all be more forgiving. Aside from the story behind it, Out the Other Side was also my first time working with a producer! Michael from Agui Studios really helped  to make the song I heard in my head into a reality. Production is definitely not my strong suit and he did such a great job!

I feel like your newest single has a very different vibe from your past works like Rotten Fruit! How do you feel your sound has changed throughout your past releases?

Even though Rotten Fruit wasn't released until 2024, I had written almost all of the songs by 2022 when I was 14-15 years old. Out the Other Side had a much quicker turnaround from when I wrote it to when it was released, albeit still almost a year, and definitely reflects the current version of me more than my previous songs do. I've honed in more on the kind of sound I'd like to have and have been leaning into the indie folk and singer-songwriter genres of music that I love listening to. I wrote almost all of Rotten Fruit on the piano, which is still how I'm most comfortable trying out new ideas. Out the Other Side started the same way, but I've been challenging myself to play acoustic guitar more often and wrote everything else in Out the Other Side, besides the opening hook, on the guitar.

What's been your favorite moment as a musician so far?

The band I'm in, GTR / Georgetown Rejects, had our live debut earlier this year and it was such a great time! It may not necessarily be a "big" moment, but it's definitely one of my favorites! I love playing music more than anything in the world and there's no greater feeling than getting to share a stage with my friends. The past few months have also been full of more jam sessions than ever before! Playing guitar in an echoey college dorm stairwell surrounded by a group of friends, both new and old, singing Billy Joel covers and Fleetwood Mac songs never fails to make me so unbelievably happy!

If you could, what would you say to yourself when you started out as a musician? What piece of advice do you wish you knew back then?

If I could talk to myself when I was first starting out as a musician, I would say to play with other people as much as I could and to play to an audience of anyone who would listen. I've been painfully shy for a lot of my life and only started being more extroverted in the past couple of years. I'm definitely more of a songwriter than a performer, but I wish I had started playing live earlier and had given myself more of a chance to develop my stage presence before releasing my first album. I've also only recently started sharing my in-progress songs on social media, which I wish I had started earlier. I've always been sort of a camera roll hoarder, I take photos and videos of everything but most of them just sit in the depths of my phone. I'm really working on getting in the habit of documenting my creative process better and then actually sharing it with others. Most of all, I wish I could tell my past self to have fun with it! Sometimes you have to write a lot of bad songs before getting to one you're happy with, enjoy it all!

What does the future hold/what are you working towards right now?

One of my big goals for 2026 has been to write and share more songs, since I have a bad habit of writing a lot and just letting songs pile up in my drafts without ever showing them to anybody. But in February, I posted a different original song every day on my Instagram and Youtube. I really love some of the songs that came out of that, and have been recording demos to share on Bandcamp. I'm also currently working on a couple of upcoming singles, which should hopefully be out sometime this spring, so keep an eye out!
