An Updated Interview with Cult Goddess, September 2026
How do you feel your sound, ways of working, goals, etc. have changed since we talked last July? (new influences, discoveries, setbacks, etc.)
Our sound as of currently is a blend of a lot of different things. I [Caleb Hickman] take influence from chamber pop and 60’s pop as well as shoegaze and old Hollywood film scores. I think that comes through on the album. I think what is changing most is the harder, more electronic rock direction we seem to be taking at our live shows. We're using fuzz pedals and synths more which creates a dancy indie rock element.
Tell me about your upcoming album!! What was the creative process behind it? What significance does it hold to you? How did you create this work as a collaborative effort?
The upcoming album is 12 songs which will be released under Why People Records and will also be printed to Vinyl. The process is as such: First, I write the songs. It can take a while. For me, the songs that I release have to have unique melodies and chord structures. There has to be something fresh about it or reinvented. After the skeletons of a song are finished, I then arrange it. Each song on the album differs drastically in arrangements. 1 minute you’ll be hearing strings and French horns while the next might be distorted guitars and noisy synths. How I decide what instruments I use, I really don’t know. I just hear what the songs need. After I arrange, I find the musicians for the parts. This time around we worked with a French horn player on some of the songs as well as a trombonist.
What has been motivating you all to continue making music together? What keeps you going?
At this point, everyone who started in the band has pretty much moved on. It’s just me [Caleb] - I guess what pushes me forward is my love for this lifestyle. I love music more than anything, and I want to do it every day of my life. I grew up with artist parents so I think at birth I was destined to have a passion for some art form. This is the 3rd or 4th band I’ve started and released music under, and I guess the goal is to make something special and to make a living.
What are some of your rituals/inspirations when writing music? (are there any themes or ideas that you keep pulling from/coming back to? Do you have a specific place you like to write at? etc.)
Sometimes if I’m having trouble finishing a song I take molly and it usually gets me to the finish line. I also typically have to be alone when writing.
What's been your favorite moment/biggest achievement as a band so far? (alternatively, what was the hardest moment? How did you get through it?)
I’m not sure if I have a biggest, but the festival we threw 2 weeks ago [early September 2026] was something I was very proud of. It was held in a photo studio warehouse and we had 15 bands perform, an ambient room where people could trip out on K, it had a bounce house and a casino where someone ended up winning $100.
What does the future hold for Cult Goddess/alongside the new album? What do you hope to do/experience within the next year?
The next year I’d like to be planning more iconic events. I would love to tour at some point and maybe find a band manager who could help me keep my life in order.
