An Interview with Tonight's Sunshine, July 2025

 How did you come up with the name?

It was Anastasia's tumblr url way back in 2012 (and still is), because of the lullaby ‘You are my Sunshine.’ It’s not a lullaby to everyone, but when it’s sung at night by someone who loves you very much, your sunshine is coming at night- hence Tonight’s Sunshine. 

  


How would you describe your sound?

Someone once described our sound being Sprite-flavored pop rocks. We blur the line somewhere between pop, alternative, rock and latin. Each song has different dominant genres but they all have music and lyrics that can stand on their own. The music is emotive and the lyrics take you on a journey. They’re meant to make you feel something.   



How was the band formed? How/when did the members decide to start a band?

Kairand, (Cougar’s dad) saw Anastasia at a random, empty open mic in town and was blown away. Cougar had been in bands from a young age to help his dad in event production, so Kairand asked him and the guitarist at the time if they wanted to be part of a new band. Kairand arranged a day for us to meet and it was a little awkward because it felt like a play date haha, but we got along and pretty much wrapped a song up on the very first day. The rest is history. 

  


How did you develop your sound as a group? Was it more individual contributions or more cohesive/together?

Anastasia will usually bring a rough draft of lyrics and chords to the table, which we then work around in our own styles. We all listen to different music, so the final product can end up sounding really different than how it started. Other times, Logan might whip up a really groovy bass line that we can easily run with and we just jam until we start finding licks and rhythms we really like, then structure them into a regular verse-chorus, verse-chorus, bridge-chorus kinda thing. 

  


Tell me about Arizona! Does your location have any impact on your work/creative processes? What was it like starting to play and develop your band in the Arizona music scene?

Tbh, Arizona is dope AF and it gets slept on too often. Usually, people assume it’s just desert and extreme heat, but we have forests, lakes, and even snow if you know where to drive to. We’re also right on the border since we’re in Tucson, and Anastasia is from Nogales which is a town that’s split in half by the wall. Nogales, Sonora and Nogales, Arizona. Some of our songs are like that- half in english and half in Spanish. Sometimes one language isn’t enough to express deep feelings. 

  


If you had no choice but to switch to an entirely new genre, which would it be?

Honestlyyyy, it might be progressive metal haha. We actually do have one song like that and it goes so hard. It’d probably be an easy switch if one of us knew how to properly scream, but we’d probably sound something like Spiritbox. 

  


How do you deal with creative block as a band? how do you continue to come up with new sounds/ideas as a group?

Besides the endless bass lines that Logan’s always pumping out, and songs that Anastasia brings to the table, Cougar is also a producer, which brings a whole new lens to songwriting. Between the three, if something isn’t working we can move on to the next method until something clicks. It takes the monotony out and helps spark the creativity in our heads.

 How would you describe your sound? I like to describe my music as alternative pop, sometimes indie pop. It’s a little darker but still has that pop influence.     Who/what inspires your music? Mostly what inspires my music is how I’m feeling in the moment about something or a situation. Kind of a flow of my thoughts. An Interview with Berzerko, July 2022

  Who/what inspires your music?      we draw inspiration from a lot of fem led bands in the hardcore scene, to list a few; we all really like the band Failure, Brainiac because of their drums, Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, Toenut, Cherubs, and Bauhaus. A lot of post punk influence, and the overall idea that music is not just a collection of “pretty noises”, and rather a shared expression of emotion and essentially a language. How did you come up with the name?      The name is completely and utterly Rivers’ fault. There’s this noise band from the 90’s called Ed Hall that were heavily in the Butthole Surfers scene. But they have this song called “Cedrick”, and 30 seconds in it goes “I’LL JUST GO!
