An Updated Interview with Spooky Ratt, January 2023




 How has your art style/what you make changed since we last talked (summer 2022)?   

    My art style has changed quite a lot this year, I’ve been learning new techniques and adventuring new styles and learning so much about myself and just overall figuring out what I enjoy and like. 

 

Tell me about yourself as a creator!

    I’m Spookyratt! I’m a mixed media artist based in Fort Worth,TX. My goal is to connect with others by expressing and capturing emotions through my work and just inviting people inside my mind.

 

What do you hope to accomplish with your business/work? 

    My goal with my work is to help inspire others and to connect with people through my art. I want to venture out more and start doing more shows and connect and meet more people as well as just be able to live off my art. I also really want to do bigger projects and collaborate with other artist!

 

Your work was shown in New York!!! Tell me about your experience! 

    It was a lot of fun! This past year I had 3 of my first art showings all in NYC and it was nice to be able to meet and talk with other artist. I got to see a little bit of the art world which was really nice to see. Overall the experience was so cool and really helped me learn and grow.

 

What advice would you give to small art businesses just starting out? 

    BE CONSISTENT. Learn to push yourself and to be stubborn with your craft, don’t be afraid to try new things and to venture out of your comfort zone. And my top advice is DO NOT DOUBT YOURSELF. Being an artist can be hard and it can be difficult being your own boss but remember why you’re doing it and remember that you are the artist you say you are.

 How would you describe your sound? What interests you about your genre(s) specifically? Describing sound in a written format is hard, but I think my sound is a culmination of the geography of where I live; Missouri has a huge history itself and the city founded on the river has roots in blues, country and rock & roll. Personally, my life changed the day my cousin put me onto Daft Punk’s “Discovery” in 2001. I wasn’t into electronic forms of music back then, I loved metal or post-hardcore. After that however, I’d spend hours delving into the deepest parts of Limewire trying to satiate my newfound love for French House music. The rich history of house music as a whole could be its own interview. Therefore, having so much to choose from makes for a big melting pot, which is how I could best describe my sound. An Interview with Eldritchsaxes, August 2026

  How would you describe your sound?  I would say that my music is a little out there at times. It has that dreamy and surreal kind of nature, with a hint of melancholy - and instruments, a good amount of instruments haha.  Who/what inspires your music?  I’m greatly inspired by Akira Yamaoka’s music in the original Silent Hill games 1 through 4, Kikiyama’s work on Yume Nikki, and alias Conrad Coldwood’s music in the game OFF. These are my three core influences, but depending on the song I’ll incorporate other inspirations, that’s for you to find out. Although, lately I’ve been re-listening to UNKLE and Tomonori Tanaka’s work on the ost for Garage Bad Dream Adventure which is definitely cooking something up in my brain.
