An Interview with Dust Mothers, July 2022
Who/what inspires your music?
Feeling the greedy need for speed and excitement, something that challenges the listener’s and our own ears. I wanna be inspired by the artistic ethic of my faves both inside and outside of music, but end up thinking 2 much and typical artistic ego takes over to inspire creation.
How did you come up with the name?
Admittedly was just a bit of a brain splurge that hit one day and felt apt. Welcoming, encompassing, and dirty. Seemed like a round, fulfilling verbal atmosphere of the sonics presented !
How would you describe your sound?
Either on the nose or in your nose, I suppose. Self sabotaging infancy of legged dreams. Loud and constant, we don’t like repeating ourselves too much.
How did the members meet?
We’re all involved in the general music scene of our beautiful town of Denton! 3/4 of us met in an old band of ours from a couple years ago, Allegheny Drive. Although, all four of us were part of a live stream festival mid-covid called Nest Fest and actually ended up feelin each other’s music minds out pretty soon after.
If you had no choice but to become a cover band, who would you cover?
Reggie Watts or Weird Al.
What is the hardest part about being in a band?
Either the usual pitfalls of artistic ego gettin in the way of fulfillment, or the forced break from not getting to play music with my friends between shows :(
What is your end goal?
Not to stress and havin fun wit it baby.
If someone wrote a book about your band what would it be titled?
The best ones we could come up with were : From Under the Rug to Clogging Your Ears
and Journey of the Most Epic Win Sauce Band of the Four Nations (Vol I — VII).
If a middle aged white man wrote a review on your band what would it most likely say?
*notices ur bulge* “H-hey, Dust Moms- er, Mothers I mean! Heh” *sweats profusely*
Something something progressive like Rush
Something something noisy like Motorhead
Something something contrived like Beefheart
That’s what he’d write.
What is the craziest thing you’ve experienced as a band?
Touring the east coast to Brooklyn as an 11 person convoy… still impressed we made it home in one sweaty piece on good terms with one another.
Which song of yours was the most fun to write & make?
The winding journey of Jamais Vu might be a collective favorite, it’s kind of a culmination of themes and ideas from throughout our new album, The Gates of Horn and Ivory. It’s a bit of a tease, an overture, and an ass smacker all in one.
What helps bond you as a band?
Workin and playin hard. After hours though, Nathan can make a pretty mean yogurt.
What is your dream venue/place to play at?
Will settle for either Trash Island, Petra, the Polar Express, or the underside of the flat earth.
