An Updated Interview with Dust Mothers, August 2023



How do you feel your sound has changed since we last talked (summer 2022)?


A little less psych and a little more punk. We have swings of caring a lot about progressiveness

and wanting to just make something fun and loud, think we're getting into a reallll tasty blend of

the two.


What was your favorite show you’ve played? Favorite band 

you’ve played with?


We were invited to play at a local Denton bar, Cool Beans, last year for a festival they were

throwing called Beanstock and it was a damn BLAST. Didn't already know most of the bands

from that night but I'm super glad we got to meet so much local talent. Fav band we've played

with?? That's kinda hard... from Beanstock? Totally Cherry. Local band? Sour Star Head.

Touring band? BIG FUN.


Describe the creative process of DEBACADEBACLE!


Ahhh sweet sweet DEBACADEBACLE. It was our first mostly collaborative release, with Rog

laying down the foundation and main riffs of each song and everyone chiming in with different

ways to approach them. The vocal intro quoting the verse riff in Self-Sabotage? Nathan's idea.

The blistering bridge section with the absurd octatonic cadence? Adrian's idea. Little bends at

the end of each dry hit in The Rub? Kegan's idea. Probably the most fun we've had writing to

date, it came together really quickly and we blasted the whole thing out in 3 days at Nathan's

studio.


How do you deal with creative block as a band? how do you continue to come up with new sounds/ideas as a group?


Any kind of block has been way easier to tackle with our current iteration of the band. With such

lovely and creative fellas all riding the same wave, any doubt on a riff or struggle to get past why

a section doesn't fit is pretty easy to talk through with. Songwriting as a concept will always be

pulled from inspiration, either consciously or indirectly from what we listen to in our free time. It's really cool seeing ideas from all of our favorite bands make their way into our Dusty goulash.

We got some King Gizz, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Ovlov, and Meatbodies all dancin around

on our tongues. Gotta get a healthy serving size of it all before serving.





How do you as a band work through the 'business' side of things?

 (booking shows, merch, promotion, etc.)


It can't be all music and jams I suppose. Luckily a lot of our shows are offers from the incredible

community we're a part of, but most of the business is to further push our Dusty agenda. Merch

to help fund or support a release/tour, promo and marketing to celebrate a milestone and look

forward to the next one. It's a necessary part of the music game but we try to mix business with

pleasure as much as we can ;)


Whats been your favorite moment/biggest achievement as a band so far?


Other than being able to play music alongside my favorite people?? Probably our tour up to

Brooklyn in June of '22. Seeing the sights, meeting all those bands, popping those tires, and

cherishing those memories will be a hallmark moment for the rest of my life.


Is there anything currently in the making? (songs, albums, tour, etc.)


The demos have already ensued, we got a bunch of delicious jams coming in hot from everyone

in the band. Some fast, some fun, some WITHOUT DRUMS?? :O There's a whole slew of ideas

brewing, this next release is gonna be a fat serving dish of hors d'oeuvres for sure. Who knows,

we may even be touring around Texas relatively soon... just remember to keep your eyes and

ears peeled.

 How would you describe your sound? I like to describe my music as alternative pop, sometimes indie pop. It’s a little darker but still has that pop influence.     Who/what inspires your music? Mostly what inspires my music is how I’m feeling in the moment about something or a situation. Kind of a flow of my thoughts. An Interview with Berzerko, July 2022

  Who/what inspires your music?      we draw inspiration from a lot of fem led bands in the hardcore scene, to list a few; we all really like the band Failure, Brainiac because of their drums, Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, Toenut, Cherubs, and Bauhaus. A lot of post punk influence, and the overall idea that music is not just a collection of “pretty noises”, and rather a shared expression of emotion and essentially a language. How did you come up with the name?      The name is completely and utterly Rivers’ fault. There’s this noise band from the 90’s called Ed Hall that were heavily in the Butthole Surfers scene. But they have this song called “Cedrick”, and 30 seconds in it goes “I’LL JUST GO!
