An Interview with Mnool, July 2022



        Who/what inspires your music?

    I have multiple inspirations to why I make the music I do, or even music in general. I’d say the start was when I was 4–8 only listening to my dad’s CDs in his car, which were, Doors — LA Women, The Police — compilation of different songs, Oingo Boingo — Skeletons in the closet, BIG Wave surf songs — just surf songs from different artists. These all still live with me, more recently Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and Tool have inspired me.

How did you come up with the name?

    I’ve had the name Mnool since I was 8, I haven’t told anybody why since.

How would you describe your sound?

    It’s really difficult to describe my sound as a whole, but I usually tell people psychedelic jazz rock, around those terms. Since it is so hard for me to describe my sound I do usually say I’m the leading artist in the chicken opera genre, which I made up for no reason, besides I like it.

If you had no choice but to become a cover band, who would you cover?

    I would choose the Doors to cover, cause I love the sound of them and I’d like to bring that 60s “fuck it” kinda feel back, I think it could do some good nowadays.

What is the hardest part about being a musician?

    The hardest thing about being a musician for me is handling life, society and a job then trying to produce genuine music that I love. If I could just focus on music for life I would be at peace. Not always happy but peaceful.

What is your end goal?

    My end goal is to travel through the universe as an eternal flowing energy, alongside the frequency I recycle known as music.

If someone wrote a book about your music, what would it be titled?

A book about my music would be titled, Chicken Opera

If a middle aged white man wrote a review on your music, what would it most likely say?

    I don’t like that he talks about drugs, but his sound reminds me of older eras. Although he has a wacky view of this world, he is going back to the roots of music. I don’t understand a lot of his lyrics though.

What is the craziest/coolest thing you’ve experienced as a musician?

    Anytime I play live, having people together focusing on me, and more importantly the music is the best experience of my life. It feels like I’m being listened to and my words aren’t bouncing off them. I get to express emotion far past our busted English vocabulary, in a more vivid way than words.

Which song of yours was the most fun to write & make?

    The most fun I had with creating a song was probably Box of rain, the chords came naturally and quickly and the synth was fun to play. Easy to mix too.

What is your dream venue?

    My dream venue is the Whiskey a Go-Go, Jimi Hendrix played there, Jim Morrison played there, all while they weren’t huge musicians yet. It helped many musicians.

 How would you describe your sound? I like to describe my music as alternative pop, sometimes indie pop. It’s a little darker but still has that pop influence.     Who/what inspires your music? Mostly what inspires my music is how I’m feeling in the moment about something or a situation. Kind of a flow of my thoughts. An Interview with Berzerko, July 2022

  Who/what inspires your music?      we draw inspiration from a lot of fem led bands in the hardcore scene, to list a few; we all really like the band Failure, Brainiac because of their drums, Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, Toenut, Cherubs, and Bauhaus. A lot of post punk influence, and the overall idea that music is not just a collection of “pretty noises”, and rather a shared expression of emotion and essentially a language. How did you come up with the name?      The name is completely and utterly Rivers’ fault. There’s this noise band from the 90’s called Ed Hall that were heavily in the Butthole Surfers scene. But they have this song called “Cedrick”, and 30 seconds in it goes “I’LL JUST GO!
