An Interview with Cosmic Frownies, July 2022
( L-R; Archie, Dominic, Javier, Autumn)
Who/what inspires your music?
So Cosmic Frownies started out as a one man band, so all of the songs on streaming services were written by me (Archie!)
The band Teen Suicide played a large part in inspiring how I wrote some of the first few songs but others were the Smashing Pumpkins, Tiny Tim, Neutral Milk Hotel and Violent Femmes to name a few.
How did you come up with the name?
It’s pretty anticlimactic but I was joking with a buddy and we were eating cosmic brownies and we noticed that mine had less sprinkles than his and one of us made the Cosmic Frownies joke!
How would you describe your sound?
I’d say our live sound is pretty indie pop/rock-ish versions of the recorded versions of the songs which are all acoustic, pretty lo-fi and stripped down.
How did the members meet?
We’ve all been friends/acquaintances for a while but the person who introduced me to all of them was Marilyn from the Red Curb / Boy Shorts! They are so awesome and I am so grateful for all of them.
If you had no choice but to become a cover band, who would you cover?
This is a really sweet question, I’d probably have to convince the others but definitely the Smashing Pumpkins.
What is the hardest part about being in a band?
Probably matching schedules! Having a job and pursuing music are tough to juggle, also lugging around gear is wack.
What is your end goal?
Just to have fun and play a lot of shows while I’m still young.
If someone wrote a book about your band what would it be titled?
Cosmic Frownies: The Frownie, Clownie, Brownie, Townie Story.
If a middle aged white man wrote a review on your band what would it most likely say?
Probably that we need to put some more rock in our roll
Or that we’re the greatest super group ever (which is true)
What is the craziest thing you’ve experienced as a band?
We’re very newly assembled so we haven’t really experienced many crazy things :( But probably Javi popping a string at sound check and having back ups lol he’s a lucky dude!
Which song of yours was the most fun to write & make?
Definitely our newest song Chump Change because we got to brainstorm on it all together which is a new experience for me.
